Plein Air Tuesday - 3/25/25 - Peace Park -- Amitabha Stupa - Day 1

I arrived a little early, but apparently not as early as Ed.  Just FYI, Ed said that the park actually opens at 8:30 and there is a chain on the gate if you arrive before then.  They did open early on this day, as I had arrived at 8:15.  When Ed arrived at 8:00, it was locked.

Ed hanging out and waiting in his car

Our guy, Mike and his Mug arrived shortly after.

Mike & his Mug

Then a few surprises.  First came along a Robin, now you're probably expecting to see this

And, while there were plenty of birds about, what I meant was this cutie.

Our Robin

Yes, she's been too busy traveling the world to come paint with us much, but she's back now.

The next surprise was our biker, Michelle.

Michelle

As we all just hung out in the parking lot talking

(L to R) Mike, Ed, Michelle, Robin all casting long shadows

Another smiling face arrived.

LeAnne

So, we decided since it was late enough we'd start walking somewhere -- I wasn't sure where to go so I followed Mike & Ed.

(Front to Back) Ed, Mike

I just happened to capture those two as they walked on up the hill but what I really stopped to take a picture of was the signs.  I did realize at the time that I most likely wasn't close enough for you to be able to read anything.  So, I'll include a link to the info about this Stupa.  Before I do that though I need to correct something I had said to Ed while we were there - so here's the background.

I had followed Ed up towards the Medicine Wheel and when we got there I started looking around and saw the big green water storage tank.  A flashback came to me and I remembered hiking around Thunder Mountain and that water tank years ago.  At the time this park nor the Stupa existed.   I had told Ed that the place really hadn't been around that long, maybe 10 + years.  Well, I was right on the + side - turns out it's 20 years old.  Amazing how fast time flies and how much things change!  I did confirm with my husband though about the hiking portion and he remembered the place well too as we did do hikes up that way frequently - but obviously it was 20+ years ago.  Anyway, here's a link to information about the park and the Stupa, but once again -- REMEMBER to come back and finish reading this.

If you clicked on the link you would have noticed that in the "About" section, there is a link to "inscribed bricks".  I'm mentioning this because this location does hold a very special place for Mike as he and his wife had frequented the park often.  He did have a brick inscribed in her memory.  Mike still brings his pup to the park for walks.

It turns out there is really a lot to see here and between the Stupa, statues, benches and flags, it's almost overwhelming.  Except for Mike and Ed who were both familiar with the location, the rest of us spent a tremendous amount of time wandering.  While we wandered,  a couple of others showed up.  They were recognizable because of all their painting apparatus.

Dona was one of them and while I thought I got a picture of her, turns out I didn't.  The other person that arrived is Pam, she's been with us before, so not a "new girl".

Pam

You can also see some of the flags in the background, I guess in the picture they sort of look like laundry.  They don't when you're there though.

Here is another pic of some of the flags.

Just realized that's LeAnne in the background

Here it looks like Ed was eyeing the ground as a place for his paints -- perhaps this wound up being his spot, but no -- you do wonder what he was looking at though.

Ed

Nope, that wasn't his spot -- just found it, it's here.

Ed in his spot

I actually didn't get a lot of people in their spots -- the paths are many and crisscross around.  I didn't have time to find them.  That's also partly because it took me so long to pick a spot -- spent too much time wandering around trying to decide.

We still have one more artist to arrive, needless to say, it's Timestamp 8:54:01 Nita 1 - actually I'm surprised she found me.  For all I know she was there much earlier but I couldn't see her for all the stuff.  Oh, and I failed to mention the ton of visitors.

Nita 1

You have to see this great little accordion fold watercolor paper booklet she bought -- the thing is only about a 2 inch square.  I can't wait to see what she winds up doing with it.

Nita 1 and the accordion fold

Oh, I just found the picture of Dona when she arrived.  Granted when you see it, you'll understand why I had such difficulty finding it.

Dona - not exactly a "close up"

As you can see, the trails though many, are narrow.  I believe this was Pam in her spot -- she actually took her sunglasses off - wow!

Pam

I stand corrected - I think I did get a lot of people in their spots, here's Mike.

Mike in his spot

There was one point where it had to be a busload of people arrived.  All of a sudden there were about 50 people wandering around the Stupa.

Oh, here's a surprise artist in their spot.

Surprise - it's Me (photo thanks to Pam)

How about that, Pam caught me in my spot -- Thanks Pam!!  Look, I was standing at a crossroad.

As we gathered to build our gallery, there was someone missing - it was Robin.  Fortunately, her spot wasn't far away.

Robin (seated in her spot) and random visitors

Well, the time flew by.  Already it was time to pick a place for our gallery.  We decided on a length of one of the paths.  We did have a slightly early leaver, it was Pam.  She shared a pic of her painting though.

Wow, they are all really great.  Bet, those of you who weren't there wished you were!

Of course, there was a debate about where to stand for the group photo, but we picked a spot on a trail and all smiled on 2, except I seem to be giving a surprised look to my left (your right in the photo).  I think it's because somehow Pam snuck in - just another one of those mystery sightings!

(Back Row - L to R) Michelle, Ed
(Middle Row - L to R) Mike, Nita 1, Dona, LeAnne, Robin
(Front Row - L to R) Me, Pam

Well, what a lot of fun this location was.  I think it's going to be a regular on our list going forward, since there's soooo many different things to paint.

Till next week!

Plein Air Tuesday - Yavapai Vista - Day 2

There is a special notice which I will start with before you all just scroll though quickly to see the pictures and not bother to read this thing.

*****************************

SPECIAL NOTICE:

Ed informed us that they have a special exhibition going on in the Sedona Art Center Theatre of Gretchen's work which is all for sale.  Now, while some of the paintings may be from what both David & Lynn had available for all of you, there are many more as yet unseen.  These were items which Kathy & Larry (Gretchen's sister-in-law and brother) had set aside specifically for sale at the Art Center, they include many of her sketches and illustrations from Grethen's earlier life in the fashion industry.  So, please do stop by SAC to see what's there.

*****************************

Ok, on to what turned out to be a pretty chilly morning but still fun and eventful!

As it turned out, most of you chickened out and didn't show.  However, Ed was one of the first people I saw when I got there.  I knew that Kris would be joining us and she did so shortly after that.

I forgot to get a picture of Ed's arrival, and I didn't really get Kris's arrival either.  Alright, I suspect at this point you're all doing a little eye-rolling, but, I was busy putting my gloves on.

As we started on our way we heard of sounds of tears being shed - oh my!

Kris and people with the tear shedder

Kris had to see what the problem was.  Not sure what it was but her stopping to talked caused enough of a distraction for him to stop crying.  Cute little fellow!  As you can see, Ed just continued walking

Ed

At this point I realized my camera wasn't out at the beginning, so I called to Ed

Ed now facing the camera

Well, that was enough for him to turn around and I fulfilled my duty of getting photos of the first arrivals plus the tear shedder and family.

We went to the same general area as last week.  And, before we even all set up, someone else showed up.

Chris, Ed

It was Chris with her small bag 😉 of art supplies.  Look at that thing, I think you could stuff a body in there.  She had told us previously she wanted something that would fit her tripod.  Me, I just make sure mine closes in a way that it's ok if my tripod sticks out the top, but hers is Fully enclosed!  But, we were really happy to see her and glad she could make it especially since she isn't going to be able to join us for much longer.

I'm including this one because it's really great photo of Chris and Ed and Rabbit Ears.

Ed, Rabbit Ears and other rocks, Chris

I mentioned it was chilly, but I failed to mention that we were starting to experience the predicted breezes that would show up.  Kris decided to seek as much shelter as possible in the wide open space.

Kris in her spot

She really did tuck herself in there.  It wasn't far from where Nita 2's spot was last week, just further into the bushes.

Ed's spot was right where you saw him talking with Chris.  Here's his setup with his very large taboret next to his tripod.

Ed's taboret

Look at that, it's big enough to hold everything, oh wait, that's the ground.  He obviously doesn't worry about getting red dirt on his stuff.  But, as you can see, it gives him a lot of room on his palette for working.

Ed mid painting

We each went to visit the others in the group, although Chris's spot was down below in David's spot from last week - but, we were able to shout to her.

Ed, Kris

We did have a lot of visitors stop by, they weren't afraid of the cold.  Several took the time to stop and visit for a bit.  One who was happy to see a watercolorist because she herself had just started working with watercolor.  She was carrying a very involved looking camera around, and reached the point now where she just uses it to take pictures to paint.  Another couple stopped to talk and they were from Connecticut - a former residence of mine as well.  Ok, I haven't done this in a long time but as I was thinking of referring to it as the Nutmeg State, I decided I should really double check in case I wasn't remembering correctly and look at what I found.  It turns out CT had several nicknames and all with a little story behind them, Have a little read, just remember to come back here!

https://connecticuthistory.org/the-storied-history-behind-connecticuts-nicknames/

So, I was surprised when I moved to CT from NY to find out it was a "Blue Law" state.  What do you mean you can't buy wine in the grocery store and what the heck is a state store?  But, what if my recipe calls for it?  Here is some other interesting tidbits about Blue Laws, the one that surprised me was Pennsylvania and the prohibition of organized sport games, although that part was changed long before I was born.  But, wild, isn't it!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_laws_in_the_United_States

Ok, I've gone off topic enough, back to Plein Air Tuesday.

Here is Chris the short-timer in her spot.

Chris

So, I'll bet anything that Chris was the happiest about having come out to paint this day -- you'll see why in a bit.

We used the usual bench for our very little gallery -

Kris decided she really wasn't dressed warm enough and headed out about 15 minutes before the rest of us.  But, her painting was happy to stick around for the gallery -- these paintings always have a mind of their own.  Of course, we all know that's the case, even when we're painting them!

While we were standing there and talking and before we even did the group shot, a group of 3 showed up and joined us in looking at our paintings.  Guess what happened next - remember I said Chris was very happy she decided to join us!  How about they fell in love with her painting and bought it on the spot.   Here she is with the buyer.

Chris and the new owner of her painting

I heard them talking as they walked back down to their car - "Isn't this exciting, we bought it straight from the artist, not just some unknown name in a gallery".   They were really so excited and you know that's a real genuine smile on Chris's face.

Speaking of smiles, here are the rest of us, smiling on 2.

Ed, Me, Chris, Kris

Looks like I caught Kris just as she was walking away with her painting 😉.

We had a good time, even though it was just a few of us.  Gave us all a better chance to catch up with what's going on in our lives.

Next week - a NEW place!

Plein Air Tuesday - 3/11/25 - Yavapai Vista - Day 1

Hmm, gee I wonder if Elmer Fudd is here.  Hey Elmer, look out there, I see his ears.  Ok, so now that you all think I've lost it, on to what really happened.

I arrived at the same time these two arrived.  Guess it's not too obvious who they are, I could've taken a picture of anyone in the parking lot for what this tells you.

Jimmy and Dona

Alright, I'll tell you, but it's only because I know.  Behind the car is Jimmy, Dona's helper and that's Dona busy getting something out of the car.  Don't worry, you'll see what they really look like later.

I also pulled in at the same time David was exiting his car.  As usual, David is always very quick to set up -- he wants to make sure he gets every second possible spent painting.

David in his spot

This was just as you enter the trail as you can see the road right out there in front of him.  So, obviously, views are all over the place and you don't have to go far.

Here comes Dona and Jimmy -- once again, I could've taken a photo of anyone up there considering how unidentifiable they are, especially Jimmy.

Dona and Jimmy (the legs walking behind her)

I found my spot just around that bend -- it's really the first bend in the trail after THE bench where the top picture was taken.  So, it turned out that no one actually ventured on up to the vista this day.  Well, almost no one.

Ok, finally some pictures of people where you can actually see who they are.  Here's Betty as she just arrived.

Betty

Chris with a C and a pumpkin for a vehicle also joined us.

Chris

So, for those of you who don't know and in case I haven't mentioned this before, Chris is the short-timer in the group.  Yes, it won't be long before she says goodbye to Sedona to be able to spend more time with the grandkids in CA.  We sure are going to miss her, don't know how much she'll be able to join us between now and the big move since she'll be busy packing.

Oh, here comes Nita 2.

Nita 2

Here's my spot - look at that clean palette and white paper, obviously I didn't get started yet.  I think what I was really taking a picture of was the big rock with Chris in the background though.

My Spot and Chris behind the shrub

We're not done yet -- more artists to come.

LeAnne

There she is, "smiling LeAnne".  She ventured a little bit further up the hill.

I failed to mention earlier that I had heard from Suzette the night before.  Her plan was to do a hike and possibly find a spot.  But, no matter what, she was determined to get her hike in.

And, look who just arrived - Timestamp 9:44, it's Nita 1.

Nita 1

She actually just came up this way to say Hi!   She already had a spot picked out that was down below and to the right of the trailhead that takes you to where we were.

Betty in her spot

Betty picked a spot right behind me -- great painting she has going there!

Dona in her spot

Dona picked a spot off to my back left as did Nita 2 which was a shrub away from Dona.

Nita 2

I had to go searching for LeAnne, but I found her!

LeAnne in her spot

Jimmy took a hike.

Jimmy

When it was time to wrap things up our other hiker but also artist showed up.

(L to R) Suzette, Betty

Yes, Suzette really was there.  She went off and did the hike that continues on to the right of the vista, we've all seen it from afar but I personally haven't taken it.  As you can see she had her artists stuff on her back, so she took time out to do a sketch before heading back down to find us.

When we got back to THE Bench, I had to go find Nita 1, I forgot to take her picture though.  So, we can't see her spot.

Oh the reason for going back to the THE Bench -- to build our gallery, of course!

And... the closeups

Some good looking works of art, especially in a short 2 hour period.  No wonder everyone smiled on 2.

So I have to start in the front row (just to keep things in numerical order 😉
(L to R) Me, Nita 1, Chris, David, LeAnne
Back row (L to R) Nita 2, Suzette, Dona, Jimmy, Betty

Hope you understood that, with them being one behind the other, I had no choice!

Keep smiling everyone!

Cecilia
